The LRBSA’s Jessup Borough Sanitary Sewer Upgrade project involved replacing 2,145 linear feet of outdated 8” and 10” sanitary sewer lines with new 15”, 16”, and 18” diameter pipes. This upgrade was necessary to expand the sewer system’s capacity, supporting commercial and industrial growth in the Jessup Borough area and fostering continued economic development in the region.
A standout feature of the project was the construction of a 412-foot-long bore beneath an existing railroad embankment to install the new sewer line under active railroad tracks. The 54” diameter bore was completed using a tunnel boring machine through both earthen and rock embankments. The bore was lined with a steel casing, allowing the new 16” sewer pipe to be installed inside it. This design ensures that the sewer line remains accessible for future maintenance or replacement without disrupting railroad operations.
Funding for the project was provided by the Lackawanna Energy Center.
